Disclaimer: Apologies for writing this post in English as I moved to Denmark only a few years ago and although I speak and write a little basic Danish, I decided to write this post in english so I can explain my journey in a better way
The Hygge Space is inspired from my walks with my family in Rold Skov. I wanted to capture the essence of Rold Skov, with its dense vegetation, winding roots and vibrant colors.
I never had an aquarium before, so did not even know where to start. All I knew was that I needed a glass cube, some gravel, a filter and lots of fish. This was such a rookie mistake and looking back I still laugh at the way I started
.
Looking out for inspiration by google searches, youtube videos, books, social media etc. I was immediately drawn to the idea of aquascaping. There is something about it that just made me feel more calm, composed and the thought of creating a mini world not just for yourself but for the inhabitants in it.
I started out with a small 60x30x30 cms cheap aquarium off facebook marketplace
. To avoid my rookie mistake this time around, I wanted to spend some time to think about what I wanted to achieve with a thorough design and multiple attempts to get the best layout.
Many trips to aquarium shops, some online orders, always looking for something to buy !!!, I then ended up with the following configuration:
Substrate: Tropica Aquarium Soil
Filter: Oase Biomster 250 Thermo
Light: Chihiros WRGB2
CO2: 2 kg pressurized
Inflow/Outflow: Aquario Neo Flow premium ver 2
The next step was finding the inspiration. I did watch quite a few aquascapers on youtube to get some inspiration, but what I learnt in the process is that, you need to find your own inspiration instead of just copying someone. I often do a lot of nature walks with my wife (and now also with my 1 yr old kid) as it was something that we as a family found that it connects us even better.
One such walk in Rold Skov among the twisted trees gave me a feeling of an enchanted forest like those they mention in fairy tales. This inspired me to create this scape. The hardscape is inspired based on the tall twisted trees and so I chose some Red Moor Wood (spider wood). To depict the rugged stones I chose Dragon stone in the foreground and Lava rocks in the mid and background.
Playing around in a cardboard box I arrived at this layout.
I selected a variety of aquatic plants to recreate the lush vegetation of Rold Skov. The foreground was adorned with delicate carpet plants like Montecarlo and Eleocharis parvula (dwarf hairgrass), creating a lush green meadow. The midground featured a mix of Blyxa Japonica, Anubias, flowering Bucephalandra, Java fern and Bolbitis Heudoliti, providing texture and diversity. The background was planted with tall stems of Rotala Blood Red Singapore and Ludwigia, their red hues adding a striking contrast to the predominantly green palette.
To bring life to the forest, the dwellers are 12 green neon tetras, 7 chili rasboras and quite a few cherry shrimp of varied colors. Watching them swim through the forest, is just an addiction.
